"Like in the Holy 90s": The Creators of the Action Game Samson Reveal the Inspirations for Its Combat System

Studio Liquid Swords has revealed details about the combat system of its action game Samson. Its foundation is chaotic hand-to-hand combat, inspired by action movies from the 80s and 90s.

The vulnerable hero rarely fights one-on-one; he is surrounded by aggressive enemies, forcing him to constantly move and improvise. The developers completely abandoned firearms to make situations more intense.

Combat is built on free improvisation — linking strikes, blocks, and using any available objects as weapons. Enemy AI adapts to the player's tactics.

The environment plays a key role: rooms can be destroyed, and debris can be used in battle. Cars are also part of the system: they can be used to run over enemies or destroy objects.

To implement these mechanics, the studio created its own system that combines animation and physics. Development was carried out through a method of experimentation and testing within a small team.
