Aaron Pierre from "Lanterns" to Head Straight into James Gunn's "The Tomorrow Man"

Aaron Pierre — the actor playing John Stewart on HBO’s Lanterns — is set to turn up in the film "The Tomorrow Man", the follow-up to Superman (2025). It’s the same character moving from small screen to big; some viewers will nod, others will roll their eyes.

James Gunn is back as writer-director, and production is slated to start this summer in ATL, assuming schedules hold.

Bringing Stewart to cinemas fits with the studio’s push to blur the lines between shows and movies. Gunn talks about crossing threads so that a TV plot point can bleed into a film, e.g., characters showing up where you didn’t expect them.

John Stewart belongs to the Green Lantern Corps — a cosmic force charged with keeping order across sectors of space, i.e., including Earth. Pierre introduces the role in Lanterns, which premieres in August, then the hero shows up again when the Superman story continues on film. It’s sequential, but not strictly linear; think chapters that overlap.

Most of the principal cast returns. David Corenswet resumes the cape as Superman and Nicholas Hoult is back as Lex Luthor. This time they’re up against Brainiac, an alien-tech antagonist played by Lars Eidinger — expect some uneasy alliances and tense standoffs.

Also coming back: Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), Skylar Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen), and Sarah Sampaio (Eve Teschmacher). Newer hero appearances include Hawk Girl, portrayed by Isabela Merced, and Engineer, played by María Gabriela de Faría.
