New Challenge League for Path of Exile Will Send Players to Explore Ocean Depths

Last night the team at Grinding Gear Games put on the promised presentation for the upcoming free expansion to Path of Exile — called Flameblast Curse. Game director Marc Roberts and designer Octavian spent about 40 minutes walking through the new mechanics and systems; parts felt polished, others felt like intentional rough edges. Expect another challenge league, this one leaning into nautical hazards and treasure-hunting.

The premise: team up with Valeri, a corsair captain, and chase lost loot beneath Reclast’s frozen waves. Players will locate special treasure maps, sail to the pin on the map, then dive down to submerged sites. Underwater exploration requires Flameblast spark lanterns that shield you from the surf — but those shields run out, so it’s a sprint: clear enemies, hoard what you can, then haul it back up to the ship. If you like cold water and glittering risk, this one’s for you.

Full notes live on the PoE site; see the extensive patch notes. Below are some of the highlights (short, non-exhaustive):

  • Voyage System — found maps can be merged into a single sea expedition; think of chained stops rather than isolated dives. Each area on the voyage shows a property active during the trip, and the board edges grant random effects that influence adjacent maps, adding layered rewards (e.g., bonus loot, hazard changes).
  • Flameblast Crafting — Valeri’s ship houses a forge that takes items and splits them into multiple phantom variants; you may keep one of those outcomes. It’s a “reroll” mechanic with tangible cost/benefit trade-offs.
  • Black Current — special maps lead to more hostile waters with tougher foes; consider these higher-risk nodes for better payout.
  • Mercenary Return — Teratna’s mercs are back, roaming Reclast. Win a duel, recruit a merc, and take a strong piece of their kit as a reward.
  • New Ascendancy Class for the Noblewoman — she can ascend into the Beacon, who can permanently field a mercenary as an active companion and freely swap that merc’s gear, opening uncommon build options.
  • Abyss Rework — abyssal cracks now radiate energy into nearby spaces and affect surrounding enemies. Expect clearer audio/visual cues during abyss encounters; combat should feel more immediate and readable.
  • Legion rewards revision — opportunities to craft unique items with powerful properties have been reworked.
  • Atlas Anomalies — new one-off zones that can be completed once for potentially powerful rewards.
  • Nest socket colors rework — nests no longer restrict which skill or support gems go into them: any color gem can be slotted into any nest. Red/blue/green nests still give extra quality to gems of the matching color, though.
  • Sorcerer Rebalance — auras with differing damage types were differentiated more sharply; Assassin, Inquisitor, and Occultist ascendancies saw skill changes. Staves and other equipment received adjustments, too.
  • New set of exceptional skill gems for Sorcerers — called pacts, these drop from bosses Inomirya and Lucia in the Forbidden Sanctuary.

The Flameblast Curse expansion launches July 24 at 23:00 on PC and consoles simultaneously. As for Path of Exile 2, it recently got its final pre-release update, Return of the Ancients. The team says version 1.0 is slated before year-end, and on launch day the sequel will be free-to-play — a move that’ll be interesting to watch, for better or worse.
