A new broom sweeps clean, and that's a good thing! Filoni announces changes in Lucasfilm and Star Wars strategy

The new leadership of Lucasfilm plans to change the approach to creating Star Wars films. Following the departure of producer Kathleen Kennedy, who allowed directors to shape their own ideas, the studio is now headed by Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan.

Whereas the studio previously started from the vision of invited creators, it is now reported that Filoni may independently determine key storylines and then assemble teams to implement them. This centralized model, reminiscent of the Marvel approach, raises concerns—it could limit creative freedom and deter major directors.

Simultaneously, Lucasfilm seems to have recognized the demand for fresh stories: work on expanding "The Mandalorian" universe has been paused, and the most anticipated project is considered to be Shawn Levy's "Starfighter"—a completely standalone story. However, rumors are also circulating about a new large-scale story arc focused on Rey, which creates a contradictory picture.

The first test for the new strategy will be the film "The Mandalorian & Grogu," releasing in May 2026. Its success or failure will likely determine the future path of the franchise.
