A Billion Dollars on Space and Belief in a Release: Star Citizen’s Budget Surpasses a Historic Mark

Chris Roberts pulled off something odd: no beta, yet millions of players and backers have funneled roughly US$1bn into the project. The space-MMO sandbox Star Citizen keeps attracting pledges — promises, stretch goals and glossy pitches doing the heavy lifting while an actual finished product remains out of sight.

Work began in 2012, and almost immediately the project turned into a donation black hole. Cloud Imperium Games’ devs say the single-player campaign, Squadron 42, will ship by end-2026; that timeline, however, reads as tentative (and not everyone believes it). Add Rockstar’s GTA 6 — due this fall and rumored to have cost >US$1bn — and the whole landscape starts to feel crowded and unpredictable.
